The presence of the chelating agents like IMDA (iminodiacetic acid) and NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) in water and other metal - bearing effluents may make many problems in the process of their decontamination. That is why there is the need to find the proper way for this purpose. The treatment methods depend greatly on the particular chelating agent and metals as well as their concentrations. The ion exchange method seems to be very useful for the removal of complexes such as Cu-IMDA etc.

The aim of this research was to examine the ion exchange equilibria of copper chelates of IMDA and NTA with the poliacrylic anion exchangers and to obtain some informations about kinetic date. The macroporous strong - basic resin Amberlite IRA958, the gel type strong - basic resin Amberlite IRA458 and the gel type weak – basic resin Amberlite IRA68 were selected in our studies. Experiments were carried out as a function of aqueous pH, the metal concentrations and the temperature. The equilibrium isotherms for the exchange Cu-IMDA chelates on the mentioned Amberlites were prepared and the effect of temperature on the equilibria of ion exchange reactions was studied and also the corresponding thermodynamic date were evaluated. The percentage of copper ions was determined by means of Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS).
