Among the chemical impurities imposing the great threat for the natural environment there are heavy metal ions which are the components of the industrial sewages. There are also many other substances in the effluents, for example chelating agents, which can react with metal ions giving new complex compounds. The potential sources of chelating agent – bearing solutions include the discharge from electroless copper plating for printed circuit boards and metal finishing industries and the effluents from washing metal – contaminated soils and sludges. Very important thing is the purification such a wastewaters before discharging them into the natural water systems both from the ecological and economical point of view.
We examinated the possibility of the use of some commercial ion exchangers for this purpose in our laboratory. Of the available ion exchangers Duolite GT-73 (functional thiol groups), Purolite S950 (aminophosphonic groups), Purolite S930 and Amberlite IRC-718 (iminodiacetic groups) and three acrylate anion exchangers namely Amberlite IRA 958, IRA 458 and IRA 68 were selected for this subject. The studies were carried out by means of extraction of copper(II) ions from the aminopolycarboxylic acid solutions (IMDA, NTA, EDTA and DTPA) on the ion exchangers. The values of the extraction coefficients (%R) were calculated. Experiments were carried out as a function of aqueous pH and time. The percentage of copper ions was checked by means of Atomic Absorption Sectrometry (FAAS).
