The gas contained in a coal bed is one of the essential factors in the phenomena of the outburst of gases and rocks. In this paper the results of the investigations on the high-pressure methane sorption and desorption on selected coals and application of the thermodynamic method to the description of the process of gas liberation from a coal bed are presented. This method enables the maximum volume of work which can be performed by a gas liberated from a coal bed to be calculated. The application of the virial sorption equation for the description of experimental data enabled to achieve the energetic properties of the coal - methane system. The volume of gas desorption and expansion works, the temperature curves and the isosteric sorption heat values were calculated. The application of the thermal sorption equation made also possible the calculation of the total "store" of work for a gas contained in a coal, at a given temperature and pressure as well as the decrease in coal temperature during desorption. These parameters can be used as an indication of outburst ability.
