THE ADSORPTION OF NICKEL
BY MODIFIED GALVANIC SLUDGE

Nickel is a very toxic pollutant in the environment, for this reason it can not be used in the production of building materials. We dealt with galvanic sludge, obtained from chemical purification of galvanic waste water, the average dimension of sludge particles is in the range of 0,2-2,5 mm, sludge contains 60% iron oxide, and the rest of the oxides are of other metals( Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr ets.). some of those, such as copper and zinc oxides may damage the metallurgic process, because of their affect on steel s ructure and technical conditions. On the other hand, nickel and other metals, cobalt, chromium for example , should remain in the sludge.
To employ the sludge in metallurgy, pretreatment should be done. Copper and zinc should be leached by acids, and nickel should remain in sludge at the same time. For this reason sludge leached studied for its absorption capacity. This purified sludge was studied for its absorption capacity of nickel. The treated samples of the sludge were shown to be a good absorbents of nickel. Using the absorption method the concentration of nickel in solution drops from 1-10 g/l to 10-100 mg/l. The absorption capacity of nickel was about 2-5 mg Ni per gram of sludge. To increase the absorption capacity, the sludge was modified by organic compounds, such as detergents and humic acid. The added organic ones were found to improve the absorption capacity on account of their possibility to form metal containing complexes. The nickel enriched sludge can be used as a raw material in metallurgy.
Thus, use of this procedure makes possible the utilization of sludge with simultaneous obtaining of copper, zinc and steel alloys, containing nickel and chromium.
