The mesoporous alumina is a promising material for using as adsorbents, catalysts and carriers. The familiar method for obtaining of such useful materials involves stage of formation of a complex of the metal-oxide precursor (metal alcoholates and ortho esters of mineral acids) with organic template (ionogenic, nonionic, or neutral surfactant), hydrolysis or precipitation of this complex in conditions promoting micelle formation, coagulation and ageing of gel, removal of template and final heat treatment.

For preparation of mesoporous aluminas we used the accessible and not expensive chemicals, namely, aluminium isopropylate or nitrate, and tetraethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, n-octanol-1, n-hexadecanol-1 and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as organic templates. On the basis of adsorption isotherms of nitrogen and methanol the structural parameters of prepared samples were determined: S = 250 – 450 m2/g, average pore diameter D= 40 – 160 Å, pore volume V= 0.6 – 1.3 cm3/g. As a rule, mesoporous aluminas synthesized retain an amorphous structure after calcination of the samples at 450-550° C.
