Vapor-phase polymerization of vinyl monomers on the surface of dispersed oxides is a promising method for obtaining modified fillers for polymers. Using IR spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry, and field ionization mass spectrometry techniques study has been made of oligomerization of some vinyl monomers on the surface of pyrogenic high dispersed aluminosilica (Ssp=75m2/g, Al2O3 = 6 wt %).
It has been shown that the treatment of the thermoactivated oxide samples with vapors of vinyl monomers at 50 – 200° C leads to formation of the surface oligomers. It has been found that the ability to surface oligomerization of vinyl monomers is decreased in the order: butyl-vinyl ether, styrene, N-vinyl-pyrrolidinone, methyl acrylate. As an example, according to field ionization mass spectra and thermal gravimetry data the chain length of the polystyrene formed on the aluminosilicate surface is characterized by 12 – 15 monomer units.
A scheme is suggested for the vinyl monomers oligomerization involving Brønsted acid sites on the surface of high dispersed Al-containing silica.
