Phenolics and flavonoids are common substituens of plants. Because of their biological importance, many studies of their separation and determination have been carried out. High-performance liquid chromatography is the most often used technique, while little attention has been devoted to thin-layer chromatography.

The aim of this study is to investigate the best elution condition in order to separate complex mixtures of phenolic acids and flavonoids in the leaves and fruits of rose extracts.

Rose fruits (hips) have long been used extensively for pharmacological purposes (skin care and antiulcers properties). Moreover, these fruits have been used as food, mainly for preparing jam, tea, and alcoholic beverages after fermentation. It is noteworthy for its high vitamin C and phenolics contents. Phenolic acids have been studied in many rose species in the past. Therefore, although qualitative data of phenolics are available, there is a lack of data on quantitative composition.

In this work about fifteen phenolic acids were separated from the rose hips by HPLC on C18 column by gradient elution with acetonitryl-acetic acid-water mixtures. The contents of main compounds in fruits from fourteen rose species was determined.

Flavonoids composition was investigated in leaves extracts of some widely growth rose species by TLC method. The comparison of the extracts was performed.
